Make-up and beauty care have been gaining prominence in the current age and trend. Makeup has evolved to become an essential tool that not only gives radiance to the skin but also confidence to the person.

Foundation is one of the most used makeup products that can lift the entire look of a person. It is essential to choose the right shade of foundation that will even out the skin complexion and disappear into it.

But on the contrary, choosing the wrong shade of foundation can make your skin look ashy, orange, or mask-like, which is too distant from your skin tone.

There are a lot of women out there who find it hard to find their best foundation shade to match their skin tone. It is mainly because they haven’t been shown how to look and search for the correct foundation shade. So here is your guide to choosing the perfect foundation:

STEP:1- Understand the tones of your skin:

Your skin has both undertone and skin tone. Skin tone is the surface color of your skin, which can be either fair, medium, or deep.

Undertone, on the contrary, is the subtle tint of the underlying surface. It is usually categorized as cool, warm, or neutral. There are chances of your skin tone changing due to long exposure to the sun, wherein your undertone stays consistent most of your life. It is using your undertone that you decide your foundation shade.

STEP: 2- Identify your undertone:

For finding your undertone, you can either conduct a vein test or undertake a jewelry test. A vein test is to look at the veins of the inside of your wrist, and if they appear to be blue or purple, you have a cool undertone.

If your vein appears to be a greenish tint, it might be an indicator of a warm undertone. And if you can’t tell the difference, it probably has a neutral undertone.

In the jewelry test, you will have to decide if you look better in silver jewelry or gold jewelry. If silver wears flatter to you, then you have a cool undertone.

On the other hand, if gold flatters you, then you have a warm undertone. If both look good, then you have a neutral undertone.

STEP: 3- Know your skin

Once you have figured out your skin’s tone, try to understand its needs and its texture. Focus on:

  • Is the skin oily, dry, or a combination?
  • What is your look- matte, dewy, or natural blend?

Answering these questions will help narrow down the list. Accordingly, you can also decide to try the liquid format, powder form, or cream form.

Bonus Tip: Always test on the jawline!

The back of your hand might not be the right spot to test the seamless blend of your foundation. It is recommended to test the foundation on your jawline, slightly into the neck. This will provide a better match.

Choosing the right foundation is more than a mere shopping decision. It is about honoring your unique skin and appreciating the beauty of your undertone. Your face with the foundation must look back from the mirror at you and not at someone else with a mask!
