Sunscreen is a must for several reasons, and the first line of defense your skin needs from the most potent aggressor there is: the sun.

The harmful UV rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage collagen, cause pigmentation, and all sorts of other things. And you can’t reverse all that with serums and retinols, however high-end or expensive they might be.

Daily sunscreen can help protect the skin

Sunscreen is an invisible layer that works tirelessly to help your skin from UVA and UVB rays from doing all of the damage they do. In all honesty, there’s a fairly common myth that only some skin types or people with light or pale skin tones need to wear sunscreen. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Dry skin? Mineral-based formulas are suitable and gentle for you. Oily, acne-prone? Non-comedogenic formulas that won’t clog your pores and will allow your skin to breathe are there for you.

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to more than just your face.

While sunscreen is mostly used on faces, many of us tend to forget about the rest of the body. UV damage to the neck, chest, hands, and arms is just as severe as the damage to the face, if not worse.

That’s because those parts of the body are often exposed to even more sun as they’re usually not covered or protected with makeup and skincare as carefully and diligently as our faces. That’s also why the aging process often shows in those body areas long before it appears anywhere else.

If it’s exposed to the sun, it needs sunscreen. Consider it the rule of thumb.

Sunscreen and makeup don’t have to be enemies.

Sunscreen is that layer that can often feel the most inconvenient to layer under foundation or BB cream.

Makeup SPFs usually don’t offer enough protection, so you should always start with a layer of sunscreen and move on to makeup. We know that life happens and that sometimes you just don’t have the time or energy to reapply sunscreen in the middle of your day.

Something powerful and also really empowering about taking care of your skin is to take care of it for the future just as much as for the present

Sunscreen is something we never think to use every day. We go to the beach or on a day trip, and most of us put it on, but what about the days we run out to do errands, sit in an office by a window, or go for a walk on an overcast day? We never think we are getting UV rays from the sun in these instances, but we are.

The take-home message

Skincare trends and fads will come and go, but sunscreen is one essential beauty product that will stay the same for as long as we exist. Sunscreen is the easiest and one of the most effective things you can do for your skin. Apply a healthy amount (don’t skimp on the sunscreen!) every morning as the last step in your skincare routine. Don’t forget it just because you are indoors! It is such an easy step, and your future self will be so happy you did.
